Box gutter, outlet, rainhead and downpipe should be read as one path, not four unrelated line items. The collection channel receives the water path designed by others. The outlet takes that channel to a discharge point. The rainhead, when included, makes the transition visible. The downpipe then continues the route beyond the head or sump.
An order becomes clearer when the drawing follows that sequence. Instead of opening with a general note about guttering, show where the box gutter starts and ends, where the outlet sits, whether the rainhead is part of the supply request and how the downpipe is named for context or supply.
Component One: Collection Channel
The box gutter is the collection channel in this relationship map. It is not just a long folded tray. It has a profile, length references, end conditions, support context, outlet locations and a relationship to adjoining roof or wall elements. Those details should already be controlled by the project design before a fabrication enquiry is treated as ready.
For order purposes, box gutter dimensions means the formed dimensions needed to make the nominated component. It does not mean a request for the supplier to calculate capacity, falls or overflow.
A fabrication schedule can still be precise. It can show the formed shape, length group, visible face, material family, finish, end caps, handed conditions, sump relationship and current revision. What it should not do is hide unresolved drainage decisions inside a metalwork line.
The Gutter as the Spine
Read this first component as the spine of the pack. If the gutter changes direction, stops at a wall, passes a junction or meets a separate tray, that change should be recorded against the gutter run. If the channel is only shown as a context line because another party is supplying it, the schedule should say so. The aim is to stop the gutter name from carrying outlet, head and pipe decisions that belong elsewhere.
Component Two: Outlet and Sump Relationship
The outlet is the place where the collection channel stops being a gutter-only conversation. Its position affects the surrounding parts, because the outlet may connect to a sump, rainhead, nozzle, connecting piece or downpipe route. If the outlet is missing from the drawing, the order cannot be read as a complete component relationship.
The outlet note should answer simple fabrication questions. Is the opening already located? Does the detail include a sump or connecting piece? Is the outlet centred, offset, handed or repeated? Which drawing shows the relationship between the gutter profile and the next component? If those answers are not fixed, mark the item for design confirmation rather than asking the workshop to choose.
A box gutter still needs the outlet, rainhead and downpipe shown as connected items. Do not invent project sizing in a supply brief.
Component Three: Rainhead Body and Overflow Context
A rainhead gives the order a visible transition point. It may be included in the same fabrication request, supplied by another party, shown for context only or excluded entirely. The drawing should make that status clear. A box gutter rain head note without supply status leaves too much to interpretation.
If the rainhead is included, show the body, outlet relationship, visible faces, overflow feature if already designed, and the downpipe connection. It may be ordered with the gutter package, referenced for context or handled in a separate stormwater schedule. The order should say which of those applies. A drawing that shows a downpipe but does not identify its supply status can make a quote request look broader than intended.

Related Pieces on Their Own Lines
If adjoining flashings, stop ends or transition pieces are part of the same roof-edge package, give them their own lines. Stainless steel pressings may sit beside a named stainless run. If they simply explain how the gutter sits in the roof design, mark them as context. This prevents a rainwater package from expanding by implication.
The same rule applies to exclusions. A downpipe drawn on an elevation may be included, noted for connection only or left to another trade package. A rainhead may be fabricated with the gutter, bought separately or already nominated by the designer. Naming those states in the order prevents the drawing from silently promising a complete drainage package.
Boundary after the Component Map
After the path has been mapped, the role boundary can be brief. Metal cladding can sit beside a related wall face. Fabrication supply can respond to confirmed component information: formed profiles, lengths, openings, sumps, rainhead bodies, downpipe sections, material notes, finish details, quantities and revisions. Hydraulic sizing, overflow design, installation method, site set-out and approval remain with the responsible project team.
This boundary is especially important for box gutters because source material links them to sizing, falls, overflow and internal-area risk. A supplier conversation is still useful, but it should carry decisions made by the designer, roof plumber, builder or certifier rather than replace those decisions.
Use the component map as a filter. If a note describes the metal part to be made or supplied, keep it in the schedule. If it asks who should calculate performance or decide compliance, resolve it before sending the enquiry.
Schedule the Items Separately
A good schedule does not need a table to be clear. Use a short list of item references in the drawing pack, with each reference tied to the relevant component. One reference might cover the gutter run. Another might cover the sump or outlet piece. Another might cover the rainhead body. Another might cover downpipe sections or related connecting pieces.

Separate scheduling also helps when revisions happen. If the outlet shifts but the gutter profile stays the same, only the affected item should change. If the rainhead is removed from the request, the schedule can show that exclusion without rewriting the gutter notes. If downpipes are supply-only in one area and context-only in another, the line items prevent confusion.
Drawing Review Along the Water Path
Review the pack by following the path in order. Light fabrication may apply if several prepared parts become one supplied item. First, read the gutter profile and length references. Then locate the outlet or sump. Then check the rainhead body and visible faces. Then follow the downpipe note to the next connection. Finally, compare every component against the revision list.

If the review finds only one uncertain item, do not bury it in a covering email. Name the affected component and the missing decision. A note such as outlet status unresolved or rainhead by others is more useful than a broad warning that the roof drainage needs checking.
